The 2025 Vintage in Saint-Emilion
Saint-Emilion's terroir is fundamentally different from the Left Bank, and in 2025 those differences worked strongly in the appellation's favour. The limestone plateau and slopes on which the finest Saint-Emilion estates sit retain water more effectively than the gravel-dominant Medoc soils, providing a natural buffer against the two months of summer drought that challenged vineyards across Bordeaux. Estates on limestone were, in several cases, able to maintain vine hydration through the dry period without the stress that affected more drought-exposed sites.
The result is wines of exceptional concentration allied to a freshness and aromatic complexity that the limestone terroir delivers so distinctively. The 2025 Saint-Emilions have fine, integrated tannins, chalky and coating, in the best cases, and a depth and energy that makes them compelling both in youth and as long-term cellaring propositions.
Cabernet Franc, which plays a more prominent role in Saint-Emilion than anywhere else on the Right Bank, was outstanding in 2025. Winemaker Edouard Vauthier at Ausone called it a "classic plus vintage," and the estate went as far as not producing a second wine in 2025, a clear statement that the vintage's quality justified putting everything into the Grand Vin. The Franc component across the appellation added aromatic lift, spice, and a floral precision that gives the 2025 Saint-Emilions real distinction.
