Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux

Domaine Arnoux-LachauxBurgundy, France

Vosne-Romanee Transformed by a New Generation

Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux is one of the most talked-about estates in modern Burgundy. Once known as Domaine Robert Arnoux, a respected but unremarkable producer by the standards of Vosne-Romanee, it has been transformed under the direction of Charles Lachaux into one of the village's most celebrated and sought-after domaines.

The story of this transformation is one of the most compelling in contemporary Burgundy. Extraordinary yields reductions, the introduction of biodynamic farming and a winemaking philosophy rooted in maximum transparency have produced wines of astonishing concentration and purity from vineyards that were always exceptional but are now being farmed to their full potential for the first time.

Estate at a Glance

Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux is based in Vosne-Romanee, in the heart of the Cote de Nuits, Burgundy. The estate covers approximately 14 hectares and specialises in Pinot Noir. Notable vineyards include Romanee-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru, Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru, Echezeaux Grand Cru, Latricieres-Chambertin Grand Cru, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, Vosne-Romanee Premier Cru Les Suchots and Vosne-Romanee Premier Cru Aux Reignots.

Production has decreased significantly as Charles Lachaux has reduced yields to amongst the lowest in the village. This deliberate choice has driven both the quality and the scarcity of the wines in equal measure, making allocations increasingly competitive each vintage.

Estate History

The foundations of the domaine were laid by Robert Arnoux, who assembled an impressive collection of vineyard holdings in Vosne-Romanee and the wider Cote de Nuits over several decades. Robert's daughter Florence married Pascal Lachaux, and the estate took the hyphenated name Arnoux-Lachaux to reflect this union. Pascal Lachaux took responsibility for the winemaking and maintained the domaine's reputation, but it was their son Charles who would transform it entirely.

Charles Lachaux began taking on greater responsibility for the domaine during the 2010s, and the impact of his approach became apparent from his earliest vintages in charge. Yields were cut dramatically, sometimes to fewer than fifteen hectolitres per hectare, a level that would be considered extreme even at the most quality-obsessed estates in the village. Biodynamic farming was introduced across the entire estate. In the cellar, a rigorously non-interventionist philosophy produced wines of a concentration and purity that the domaine had not previously achieved.

The response from critics and collectors was immediate and dramatic. Prices rose sharply. Allocations became fiercely contested. Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux had become, almost overnight, one of the most discussed names in Burgundy.

Why Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux is Different

The Arnoux-Lachaux story is fundamentally about what happens when exceptional terroir is finally farmed and vinified to its full potential.

The vineyard holdings that Charles Lachaux inherited were always among the finest in Vosne-Romanee: Romanee-Saint-Vivant, Grands Echezeaux, Latricieres-Chambertin, Les Suchots and Aux Reignots are not ordinary parcels. Under Robert Arnoux and Pascal Lachaux, these sites produced good wine. Under Charles, they produce extraordinary wine, and the difference is almost entirely attributable to the extremity of the yield reductions and the clarity of the biodynamic philosophy applied in the vineyard.

What makes this particularly compelling for collectors is that the recognition has been rapid and the prices, whilst already significant, are still arguably below what the quality of the finest vintages warrants when measured against the domaine's Grand Cru peers. That gap is closing with each passing year.

Vineyard Holdings

The domaine's Grand Cru holdings are among the most impressive in Vosne-Romanee. Romanee-Saint-Vivant, the most elegant of the village's Grand Crus, is perhaps the domaine's most celebrated wine and one of the finest expressions of this legendary climat currently produced. Grands Echezeaux delivers structure, concentration and remarkable ageing potential. Echezeaux provides a more generous and approachable expression. Latricieres-Chambertin, in the Cote de Nuits further north, adds the mineral precision and cooler character of that Grand Cru to the portfolio. Clos de Vougeot completes the Grand Cru range.

At Premier Cru level, Les Suchots and Aux Reignots both border Grand Cru vineyards directly, and under Charles Lachaux's extreme yield reductions both produce wines of concentration and complexity that approach Grand Cru quality. Village Vosne-Romanee, Nuits-Saint-Georges and Chambolle-Musigny complete the range and offer access to the domaine's philosophy at more accessible price points.

Winemaking Philosophy

Charles Lachaux's winemaking philosophy is built on a single conviction: that the wine is made in the vineyard, and that the cellar's role is to preserve what the vine has produced with the minimum possible interference.

In the vineyard, biodynamic principles guide every decision. Yields are maintained at levels that are extreme even by the standards of Vosne-Romanee's most quality-focused producers. Hand harvesting and meticulous sorting ensure that only the finest fruit reaches the cellar. In the winery, native yeast fermentations, whole-bunch inclusion to varying degrees depending on the vintage, and very careful extraction produce wines of extraordinary concentration. Ageing in oak is patient and the proportion of new barrels is carefully calibrated to support rather than dominate. Bottling takes place without fining or filtration.

The results are wines of remarkable purity and transparency, where the individual character of each Grand Cru and Premier Cru site is expressed with a clarity and intensity that is increasingly recognised as amongst the finest being achieved in the village.

Signature Wines

Vosne-Romanee Village

Produced from parcels across the village under the same meticulous approach applied to the estate's Grand Crus, the village wine consistently delivers quality far above its classification. It is one of the finest introductions to the domaine's philosophy available at any price.

Vosne-Romanee Premier Cru Les Suchots

Bordering Romanee-Saint-Vivant directly, Les Suchots is one of the finest Premier Cru sites in the village, and under Charles Lachaux's extreme yield reductions it produces wines of Grand Cru intensity and aromatic complexity. It is widely considered one of the most exciting Premier Cru Burgundies available today.

Romanee-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru

The jewel of the portfolio and one of the most celebrated expressions of this legendary vineyard currently being produced. Arnoux-Lachaux's Romanee-Saint-Vivant combines the ethereal elegance and floral aromatics that define this Grand Cru with a concentration and purity that reflects Charles Lachaux's extraordinary approach in the vineyard. It is consistently one of the most sought-after allocations from Vosne-Romanee.

Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru

Powerful, structured and deeply complex, Grands Echezeaux delivers the most age-worthy wine in the portfolio. It develops slowly and rewards the most patient collectors, revealing extraordinary mineral depth and complexity over twenty years or more.

Latricieres-Chambertin Grand Cru

From the cooler limestone slopes of Gevrey-Chambertin, Latricieres-Chambertin provides a different expression of the domaine's philosophy: more mineral, more structured, and with a purity and precision that makes it one of the most compelling Grand Crus in the portfolio.
