Château Valandraud is a modern success story in the Bordeaux wine world, having risen from humble beginnings to become one of the most celebrated estates in Saint-Émilion. Created by Jean-Luc Thunevin in 1991, Château Valandraud exemplifies the "garagiste" movement, where small, garage-style wineries broke the traditional Bordeaux mould to produce highly concentrated, high-quality wines. History of Château Valandraud

Château Valandraud was founded by Jean-Luc Thunevin, a former wine merchant and self-taught winemaker, who started with just 0.6 hectares of vineyards in the early 1990s. With limited financial backing but a deep passion for wine, Thunevin set out to prove that small, meticulously farmed vineyards could produce wines that rivalled those from Bordeaux's most established estates.

Initially considered an outsider by Bordeaux’s traditional wine elite, Thunevin's success with Château Valandraud helped to define the garagiste movement. This movement saw small producers using innovative techniques to craft wines of extraordinary concentration, often with low yields and rigorous vineyard management. The wines quickly gained critical acclaim, and within a decade, Château Valandraud became a cult wine sought after by collectors.

Thunevin's unconventional approach and determination paid off when Château Valandraud was elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé (B) in the 2012 Saint-Émilion classification. This recognition marked a significant achievement for the estate, cementing its status as one of the top wines of Saint-Émilion.

Terroir of Château Valandraud

Château Valandraud's vineyards are located in the heart of Saint-Émilion, covering around 10 hectares of prime Bordeaux terroir. The soils are a mixture of clay-limestone, gravel, and sand, which provide excellent drainage and ideal conditions for growing Merlot, the dominant grape variety at Valandraud. These soils help to produce grapes with great concentration and complexity, key characteristics of the estate’s wines.

The vineyard is planted with 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and smaller percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Carmenère. The high proportion of Merlot contributes to the wine’s rich, velvety texture, while Cabernet Franc adds structure and aromatic complexity. The diverse soil types allow for optimal expression of these grape varieties, resulting in wines that are both powerful and elegant.

Winemaking at Château Valandraud

Jean-Luc Thunevin’s winemaking philosophy revolves around attention to detail and innovation. The estate’s low yields, achieved through green harvesting and meticulous vineyard management, ensure that only the best grapes make it into the final wine. The grapes are hand-harvested and sorted multiple times to ensure optimal quality.

Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and French oak barrels, allowing for precise extraction of flavours and tannins. The wine is then aged in 100% new French oak barrels for 18 to 24 months, contributing to its rich texture and complexity. The extensive use of new oak is a hallmark of Château Valandraud, imparting notes of vanilla, spice, and toast, which integrate seamlessly with the ripe fruit flavours.

Style of Wine Produced

Château Valandraud produces full-bodied, concentrated wines that are rich and opulent, yet balanced by fresh acidity and fine-grained tannins. The wines are deeply coloured, with intense aromas of black fruits, plum, and dark chocolate, complemented by notes of vanilla, cedar, and graphite from the oak ageing. On the palate, they offer a luxurious mouthfeel with layers of dark fruit, spice, and earthy minerality. Valandraud wines are known for their ageing potential, often requiring several years in the bottle to fully develop their complex flavours. However, they can also be enjoyed young for their exuberant fruit and silky texture.
