History of Château Troplong Mondot

The history of Château Troplong Mondot dates back to the 18th century, although the estate truly began to gain prominence in the early 19th century under the ownership of Raymond Troplong. Troplong, a prominent lawyer and president of the French Senate, acquired the property in 1850 and expanded the vineyard, laying the foundation for the estate's future success. He was also responsible for constructing the château that still stands today, a grand structure that reflects the estate's prestigious reputation.

In 1936, the estate was purchased by the Valette family, who managed Troplong Mondot for nearly 80 years, significantly enhancing its reputation in the process. Under the Valette family's stewardship, the estate was classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in 2006, solidifying its status as one of the top producers in Saint-Émilion. The estate underwent another significant transformation in 2017 when it was acquired by the French insurance group, SCOR, who appointed Aymeric de Gironde as the managing director. De Gironde, previously of Château Cos d'Estournel, has since focused on refining the estate's practices, balancing modern winemaking techniques with respect for tradition and terroir.

The Terroir of Château Troplong Mondot

The terroir of Château Troplong Mondot is one of its most defining characteristics, contributing significantly to the power and elegance of its wines. The estate’s 33 hectares of vineyards are situated on the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, with additional plots on the clay-limestone slopes and foothills. This diversity of terroir is a key factor in the complexity of Troplong Mondot’s wines.

The limestone soils, rich in fossils and minerals, provide excellent drainage and contribute to the fresh acidity and minerality that are hallmarks of the estate's wines. The clay-limestone mix on the slopes retains moisture, helping to sustain the vines during dry periods, and adds to the richness and depth of the wines. The elevation of the vineyards, some of the highest in Saint-Émilion, provides a unique microclimate that moderates temperatures and promotes even ripening.

The vineyard is planted with approximately 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2% Cabernet Franc. Merlot thrives in the clay-limestone soils, providing the wines with their signature richness and opulence, while the Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc add structure, aromatic complexity, and the potential for long ageing.

Winemaking at Château Troplong Mondot

Winemaking at Château Troplong Mondot is a meticulous process that reflects the estate’s commitment to quality and the expression of its terroir. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted to ensure that only the best fruit is used. Fermentation takes place in a combination of temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete vats, allowing for precise control over the process and ensuring that the wines develop their full range of flavours and tannins.

The wines are then aged in French oak barrels for 16 to 24 months, with around 75% new oak used each year. This ageing process adds complexity and structure to the wines, allowing them to develop the rich, opulent character that Troplong Mondot is known for. The estate also employs a long period of barrel ageing, which helps to soften the tannins and integrate the flavours, resulting in wines that are powerful yet balanced, with a remarkable capacity for ageing.
