Kaleidoscopic, this glorious vintage is terroir translucent, transporting you to the vineyard with its signature aromas of dried sage, Eucalyptus olida (aka Strawberry Gum), wild mint, wattleseed, nutmeg and tinder. Soaring and super-expressive, these scents bring compelling dimension and meld exquisitely on the sweet, juicy plum and bramble palate, with its cocoa nib and earthy hints. Graceful, willowy tannins and mineral acidity make for a long, fluid, markedly perfumed finish. Irresistible already!
Form a single vineyard of 105yo shiraz vines on Mount Edelstone in the Eden Valley, farmed according to organic and biodynamic practices. Aged in 86/14% French and American oak (26% new) for 18 months. I was lucky enough to live next door to the Mount Edelstone vineyard for 8 years and have consumed a fair amount of Cooper's Green on the bench at the summit; I have seen the amount of fastidious work Henschke put into the vineyard. It's a special place. Bright, intense blackberry and blackcurrant fruits mesh with hints of Asian spice, tar, turned earth, rosehip, sage and high-cocoa dark chocolate. Displaying a beautiful, pure, dark fruit flow, it's a wonderfully complex wine with ripe long-grain tannins and sprightly mineral acid drive, finishing very long and graceful with a core of cassis and spice. Will cellar magnificently.
Planted in 1912 and bottled on its own since 1952, this is one of Australia's hallmark single-vineyard wines. Scents of cracked pepper, licorice, mint and resinous herbs mark the nose, backed by black cherries and perhaps a bit of cassis this year, while the palate is medium to full-bodied, silky and streamlined. Although the 2017 Mount Edelstone Vineyard Shiraz doesn't have the richness and expansiveness of the greatest vintages, it's impressive in its own way, with terrific energy, length, gentle, soft tannins and herbal complexities for days.
Henschke is one of Australia's most renowned and respected wineries producing one of the country’s most iconic single-vineyard wines, the Hill of Grace. Founded in the 1860s by Johann Christian Henschke, the winery has been passed down through six generations of the Henschke family, who have dedicated themselves to preserving the rich winemaking traditions of their forebears while incorporating the latest innovations in winemaking techniques. The estate is now run by husband and wife Stephen and Prue Henschke who are the winemaker and viticulturist, respectively.
The winery's flagship wine, Hill of Grace, is one of the most highly sought-after Shiraz wines in the world and is made from vines that are 155 years old. The wine is a true expression of the Eden Valley terroir, and is renowned for its trademark elegance, complexity, depth, and balance. The wine is tightly allocated and highly sought after.
In addition to Hill of Grace, Henschke produces a range of other high-quality wines, including the Keyneton Euphonium, a classic Barossa blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. This wine showcases the beauty of blending, with each of the four grape varieties clearly visible in all their glory. The Henschke Mount Edelstone, on the other hand, is a pure Shiraz made from vines that date back to 1912. This single-vineyard wine has been produced since 1952 and is considered one of Australia's hallmark single-vineyard wines, known for its kaleidoscope of complexities.
