Where the Polish Hill is the powerful, muscular one of the family, the Springvale is the often underestimated little sibling. Similarly powerfully structured, but leaning towards the spicy end of the spectrum rather than plum in the middle of fleshy fruit power. This is structured and saline, with layers of cut lime, red apple skins, saffron, turmeric and citrus pith. All of it encased in briny acidity and stretched out over an interminably long finish. Generous and structured at once. Super smart.
Jeff Grosset makes some of the most extraordinary and age-worthy white wine in Australia. His Polish Hill Riesling is considered by many to be a true icon of the Clare Valley and stands as the flag bearer for true Australian dry Riesling. Having tasted a vertical of his wines spanning two decades, the thing that strikes you is how it carries its natural acidity so well, that it can be drunk well after 20+ years of cellaring! Grosset is old school, using organically farmed vineyards, tending everything by hand, and picking at optimal moment for grape ripeness.
The famous auction house Langton’s went on to create a classification for top Australian wines, not too dissimilar from that of Bordeaux in 1855 which put the likes of Chateau Lafite and Haut-Brion as ‘First Growth’ status. Grosset’s Polish Hill was one of three white wines and the only Riesling rated as ‘Exception’, which would carry the weight of Grand Cru status.
