Chiara Condello is making some of the most exciting Sangiovese in Italy from the humble village of Predappio in Emilia-Romagna . Going back to classical winemaking, she farms organically, vinifies with indigenous yeast and uses Slavonian oak aging whilst bottling unfiltered. Only a few vintages in and she’s wowing Sangiovese lovers around the world. Her wines are pure in style, sensually textured and layered with complexities that fans of top Sangiovese from Chianti will fall in love with. Her wines have been served in three Michelin star Mirazur in France attesting to the high quality.
Emilia-Romagna is not often a region that makes the headlines but being sandwiched between Tuscany, Lombardy and Veneto its history in cultivating Sangiovese goes equally as far back as Tuscany’s. Chiara’s success comes from having identified sites with cooler expositions at higher altitudes. Her vineyards are typically between 150 to 300 meters in elevation with the vines digging their roots deep into a calcareous-clay soil with large, porous seashells strewn throughout. These hillsides have existed for years and it’s about time some like Chiara Condello has come along to extract the most from them.
Is this central Italy's best-kept secret? We're sure it won't be for too much longer... Eric Guido of Vinous summarises it nicely for us that Chiara Condello is “one of the most exciting new producers in Romagna today”. With such high praise and demand building for her wines, we would suggest stocking up whilst prices are more than fair! We certainly have.
