Javi Revert Simeta 2023

2023 from Javi Revert of Valencia
There’s a lot of exciting wines coming out of Spain at the moment, with a series of passionate young winemakers reviving old native vineyards and making some stunning wines. Javi Revert is one such winemaker making waves with his wines from around Valencia, a region that we don’t often hear from.
“Javi Revert is one of the most exciting young growers in the Mediterranean zone of Spain. He started in 2016 while working at Celler del Roure, recovering old vines planted by his great grandfather in the village of La Font de la Figuera in Valencia. "
- Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate
Javi Revert is redefining the potential of Valencia’s forgotten vineyards. Rooted in his family’s heritage, he has restored old sites on north-facing limestone slopes around La Font de la Figuera, planting indigenous varieties and farming organically. With elevations reaching over 700 metres, his vineyards produce wines of remarkable freshness and precision, harvested weeks later than his neighbours. Fermented with native yeasts and aged in amphorae, demi-johns, or neutral oak, his wines express purity, vibrancy, and an unmistakable sense of place.
Simeta is one of Javi Revert’s most captivating wines, crafted from a rare one-hectare vineyard of Arcos planted in 1970 on limestone and iron-rich soils. Fermented with whole clusters and native yeasts, it is aged in a mix of foudre, barrel, amphora, and glass demi-john, preserving purity and energy. The wine brims with Mediterranean character, showing vibrant red fruit, wild herbs, and peppery spice, carried by refreshing acidity and a clear expression of its singular terroir.
Javi released his first vintage in 2016, and with both production and demand continuing to grow, 2023 marked an exciting step forward. He began working from a new barrel room, with further expansion already planned. This added space and control brings greater precision to his winemaking and élevage, setting the stage for even higher quality in the years ahead.
The Simeta 2023 is arguably his finest wine to date, awarded 96–97 points by the Wine Advocate. With such limited production from this tiny one-hectare plot, allocations will disappear quickly. This is a rare chance to experience one of Spain’s most exciting new voices at the very peak of his craft.

I tasted the 2023 Simeta next to the 2022 vintage, still unbottled. 2023 was a cooler year, basically saved by some rain at the end of the summer. The wine had a similar vinification and élevage—100% full clusters and aging in oak vat and barrel—that's already completed, and the wine is resting in concrete. It has lower alcohol, 13.5%, a lower pH, 3.48, and higher acidity. This is obviously too young, but it's a little narrower and longer, more complete than the 2023 but, at the same time, more approachable and with better parameters. It should be bottled around March 2025. He expects to produce some 3,200 bottles of it.
