Lukas van Loggerenberg wines Breton Cabernet Franc, Lotter Cincault and Kameraderie Chenin Blanc.

After offering the Graft Syrah from Lukas van Loggerenberg, we received many requests for the rest of his range—so here it is. We’re now pleased to offer the Breton Cabernet Franc, Lotter Cincault and Kameraderie Chenin Blanc.
Lukas van Loggerenberg is part of a new wave of winemakers redefining South African wine—bringing sensitivity, detail and restraint to the fore. Originally from Durbanville, Lukas trained at Elsenburg and cut his teeth working at wineries across the Cape and abroad. After several years at Rudy von Waltsleben’s Druk My Niet, he launched his own label in 2016, beginning with just four barrels made in a rented corner of a friend's cellar.
From the outset, Lukas set out to make wines with soul—wines that are expressive, balanced and transparent to place. Working with some of the Cape’s oldest and most characterful vineyards, he champions heritage varieties like Chenin Blanc and Cinsault, often sourced from gnarly old vines across Stellenbosch, Paarl, and the Swartland. His range includes both reds and whites, but all his wines share a common thread: purity of fruit, electric acidity, and a distinct sense of finesse.
Breton Cabernet Franc
Named after the Loire Valley synonym for Cabernet Franc, Breton is Lukas’s homage to Chinon, reimagined through Stellenbosch terroir. The wine opens with aromas of ripe blackberries and plums, intertwined with its signature herbaceous character. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with finely structured, gripping tannins. Initially reserved, it unfolds with a plush texture, revealing spice and subtle earthiness. The finish is long and drying, yet the vibrant intensity of fruit lingers with remarkable poise.
Lötter Cinsaut
Lötter is a pure Cinsaut from the second-oldest red vineyard in South Africa, planted in 1932 in Franschhoek. The wine presents an earthy, dark-fruited nose with a core of plum, cherries, wet earth, and black pepper. The tannins are finely interwoven, leading to an extra-long finish. Matured in concrete eggs, it showcases good fruit density and a roundness without being weighty, while the acidity is bright and the tannins very fine.
Kameraderie Chenin Blanc
Sourced from 74-year-old dry-farmed vines in Swartland’s decomposed granite soils, Kameraderie is a masterclass in texture and restraint. The bouquet offers lemon curd, white chocolate, and almond scents, with pronounced dusty, mineral tones. The palate is taut but well-balanced, featuring veins of lemon curd and barely ripe nectarines. Its structure is akin to a bronze sculpture—malleable yet firm—promising graceful aging for a decade or more.
If you’re curious about what makes South Africa one of the most exciting wine regions today, Lukas’s wines are the perfect place to start.
Breton Cabernet Franc 2021

The wine is such an established part of the Cabernet Franc scene in the Cape that it's hard to believe that 2021 is only the sixth vintage of Breton. Wonderfully fresh and perfumed, with dill, violet, paprika and lead pencil aromas, focused black cherry and raspberry fruit, detailed tannins and very nuanced oak. 2024-32

The 2021 Breton is the Cabernet Franc cuvée sourced from two farmers that Loggerenberg has worked with since the beginning in Polkedraai and Klein Welnoed, the former 100% whole bunch and the latter de-stemmed. Aged in used 500-litre oak barrels, like previous vintages, it expresses the variety succinctly, obtaining a Loire-like pepperiness (partly due to the stem addition). The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, a dash of white pepper and a touch of lavender, very long and tender with a surfeit of freshness from start to finish. Wonderful.
Lotter Cinsaut 2023

The dry conditions in the early part of the harvest meant that the 1932 Lötter vineyard yielded just 1.8 tons per hectare in 2023. Floral, intense and savoury, this is mid-way between a Cinsault and a Nebbiolo in style, with notes of forest floor, truffle and rose petal and layers of plum, bramble and red berries. 2025-30

The 2023 Lotter comes from Cinsault vines planted in 1932 that produce naturally low yields. This was 100% destemmed and aged in three 500-liter French barrels. It has a detailed redcurrant and pomegranate nose commingling with wild mint, fennel and a touch of thyme. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, piquant red fruit and a dash of white pepper toward the finish. Linear in style, it has a dry, almost "aloof" finish that keeps you coming back for more. Superb.
Kameraderie Chenin Blanc 2022

The 2022 Kameraderie is 100% Chenin Blanc from Swartland, matured in 65% concrete and 35% used oak barrels. Van Loggerenberg mentioned that it is aimed at Chenin purists. Around 70% comes from Lammershoek and was planted in 1960. It has wonderful delineation and mineralité on the nose, vibrant and brimming with energy. The palate is well-balanced with citrus peel, orange rind and just a touch of pistachio, really saline and more-ish on the finish. One of Van Loggerenberg's best cuvées this year.

It wasn't always so, but Kameraderie is now a Paardeberg-sourced Chenin Blanc, made with grapes from two different sites on decomposed granite soils. Engagingly taut, racy and sappy, it has fennel and fynbos aromas, negligible oak influence, a backbone of steely acidity and enticing green apple and lemongrass flavours. 2024-29
